Gilt Groupe Says F-Commerce Stands for Flash Sales and Facebook

Gilt Groupe, an e-commerce and flash sales site, is experimenting with selling items from a range of categories — on Facebook.

The New York-based company said Facebook users will be able to go to a special page on Facebook, where they can log in using their regular account information to browse items and check out.

The site will officially launch on Monday, featuring items from women’s, men’s, children’s and home.

Other retailers have dabbled in F-Commerce, which is short for Facebook Commerce. But with most experiments today, it’s not much different from shopping on the Web. Unlike how users pay for items in games or buy movies on the social network, retailers don’t have to use Facebook Credits, which would require giving Facebook a 30 percent chunk of the transaction.

A spokesperson confirmed it was not using Facebook Credits and said that the platform was built in-house.

In a release, Gilt explained that it will offer products on the Facebook page that will not be available on its regular site. For example, Gilt Man will launch its first sale with a themed event called Man About Town featuring clothing, shoes, and accessories, and Gilt Home will offer a Vera Wang Home sale that will be available first on Facebook and then later on Gilt. Gilt Children will also have exclusives from Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, including a 1.5-foot tall Lego model.

Facebook and Google+ Battle It Out In The Social Network Arena

Google+ is a month old and is playing catch-up with Facebook, which is set to go on a public offering next year. Google needs to gain a lot of ground if it wants to be number one social network. At present, Facebook has 750 million users.

social network marketing Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt acknowledged that his company was late in coming to the social network market. It is important for consumers to have an online identity and personalization that could provide lucrative commercial success for the company.

Google has invested in a lot in different things, such as video communities and mobile operating systems but the core of its business is still its search engine. It was because of search that fueled the boom of online content and the company doesn’t see social data as a replacement for search. Instead, the search giant views it as another layer that accesses data in a different manner.

Google+ is seen as an intelligently designed social network but analysts say it lacked the human focus required for a social network. It was this factor that boosted Facebook’s popularity. This is the reason why it has 750 million registered users.

But the bottom line is the profits. Estimates show that Facebook ad revenues will grow from $0.74 billion in 2009 to $5.7 billion in 2012. 97 percent of Google’s revenue comes from advertising.

No Teacher-Student Friendship On Facebook: New Law In Missouri Makes It Illegal

The on-going debate about how teachers and students should interact using social media is about take centre stage, yet again. According to new proposed legislation in the state of Missouri, teachers and students are forbidden from being friends on Facebook.

unhappy-facebook-usersLawmakers feel that that making friendships between the two groups illegal, a greater sense of professionalism can be maintained. The law is designed to prevent inappropriate contact between teachers and students, particularly as it relates to sexual misconduct.

The motivation for the new law has sound reasoning, the trouble is, how on earth do you monitor things? How can you ensure that electronic interaction between specific individuals are monitored? Unless parents are hauled in to help police things, it’s going to be difficult for school officials to keep track. And it also helps to bear in mind that with talk of electronic media representing ‘schooling’ of the future, such student teacher interaction will indeed become more commonplace.

On the other side of the coin, privacy advocates are bound to be up in arms about the proposed piece of legislation, which by the way, takes effect on August 28. Whether the legislation will hold up under constitutional scrutiny remains to be seen. For now however, the policing of the new law will be watched closely by other states. Should it prove successful in curtailing the troubles associated with inappropriate teacher/student relations, I am sure it will be adopted by other legislators.

What do you think about the new legislation? Share your thoughts in the comments below

New Facebook Status Update Feature: I am Pregnant!

For many women and their families, conceiving is a big deal. The disclosure of pregnancy however, is not the same across the board—some people like to let people know, while others do not.

Facebook Pregnancy Announcement FeatureWell for those who like to broadcast every momentous event in their lives, Facebook has just added the ability to update your status with news of a pregnancy. This new feature is available not only to pregnant women, but for just about anyone who would care to share the news about a pregnancy.

According to the daily mail, the new feature is welcomed by people who previously couldn’t involve their babies on Facebook without breaking the 13 year age requirement—yes, the only way your baby could get on Facebook was with their own profile. Now your baby or the baby of anyone you know can be prominently displayed in your newsfeed. And since it lets you enter details such when the baby is due, you can have an interactive countdown to the big day—how lovely?

There is however, another way to look at this new feature. Allowing people to put “pregnancy status updates” on their profiles, creates another layer of targeting. Now advertisers who sell stuff related to babies can better target their ads. Of course, this way of looking at things could be totally off; Facebook could very well only be interested in making their platform baby-friendly. Somehow, though, I doubt it—if there’s money at stake, and Google+ lurking, Zuckerberg leaves no stone unturned.

Whatever the motivations for the new “I am expecting” feature, it will be a welcomed addition for the millions of people who like to share their lives.

Do you think this new feature is worthwhile? Watch the video below to see more great features inside Facebook.

Facebook Offers $500 Reward for Bugs

Facebook announced that it will give $500 bounty for people who report bugs on its site. This is much less than the bug rewards offered by other internet companies such as Microsoft and Google. Facebook posted on the Security Bug Bounty page that the reward is to show appreciation for security researchers who find security bugs in the social network site. Facebook Reward

To qualify for the reward, the person must report the security glitch. The bug should be native to Facebook and not in third party apps. The disclosures of the bug must be responsible and should give the company enough time before reporting the bug to the public. Security researchers have the knack of reporting their finds on blogs to warn the users about it.

$500 is just the base of the bounty but it is small compared to what other companies have to offer. Google pays $3,000, Microsoft pays $250,000 and Mozilla pays $3,000. Tipsters who report illegal use of unlicensed software to the Business Software Alliance can get up to $1 million.

Reporting Facebook bugs can help upcoming security researchers make a name for themselves in the security community. The reward might be smaller but bounty programs can lead to a good relationship with other members of the security community.

How to View Blocked Content on Facebook

There is an interesting post on XDA developers here recently covering tricks posted by Marko on how to view blocked content on Facebook private profiles.

The trick is said to be working on Android devices with official Facebook app installed, granting access on viewing Facebook private content and pictures of anyone’s as if they have added you as friends.

Unpermitted and illegitimate access to anyone’s Facebook profile and viewing content that are meant for friends only is undoubtly unacceptable to us, as we write this we have yet to try out the trick but many has responded success on the forum thread in prying on the blocked content. We at Pczonenow are hoping it will not do much harm as perverts are everywhere Lol.

Following is the trick as shown on XDA forum thread here by Marko:

The first step is to make sure that you have Facebook installed on your phone. Now log into your account. After this tap on the person’s profile pic whose hidden content e.g. photos you want to see.And as their profile is still loading, quickly tap on the photos tab.And voila! you are now in that person’s photo gallery with access to all their photos. It is worth mentioning that you will need to do it quickly while the profile is loading. Failing to do so will land you on the info page with same add as a friend button.

Google Plans To Stomp On Facebook With Its Google+ Games Platform

No social network is complete without the full integration of games; and not just any game—we’re talking the sort of games that can set off a viral frenzy. Google Games

Given this inherent requirement, it’s no surprise that Google is laying plans to launch its own gaming platform on Google+. The prevailing rumor is that the platform will make Facebook look like child’s play. According to reports, Google plans to make its platform more developer and user friendly. The incentive for developers is reported to be very solid, with Google planning to give each developer, the lions-share of any application downloads—more than 70%. This move will no doubt entice developers to “develop for Google+” over Facebook.

Google plans a full frontal assault on usability too. According to Tricia Duryee of AllThingsD, the gaming platform will run on Google’s Client technology. In a nutshell this means games will be run directly inside the chrome browser, without the need for installing pesky plugins. This of course is where the speed and ease of use comes in, and if things develop according to plan, users will be very happy indeed.

Already, Google has got on board some of the top developers in the social-gaming sphere, including the people behind “Angry Birds”. I expect more top developers to jump on the Google+ gravy train, so idea of Google+ posing a legitimate threat to Facebook might not seem far-fetched after all. Time will tell.

Are you a fan of gaming while hanging out on social networks? Watch the video below to see some analysis of Google next move.
